When you ask people, what is the church? The responses are widely varied depending on who you ask. For some it’s the place where they used to go. For others it might be where some of their family or friends attend. There are also those who attend their church with dedication and faithfulness. I have observed that the church remains a mystery to most of our society. It would seem that maybe the church needs to be re-introduced into public life in its true biblical form.
If the church is presented in a way that is inconsistent with its original biblical template, then understanding the church’s true purpose is missed. Jesus established the church for the purpose of saving, loving and helping people. In a recent message I asked our congregation an important question. The question was this. What would happen if we didn’t settle for just going to church, but we would choose to “be the church?” The early church of the New Testament did that very thing, they made a decision when they believed on Jesus to be the church!
The book of Acts is full of the amazing results that believers both witnessed and participated in, Acts chapter 6 verse 7 describes a glorious picture of the manifest power of God working among them.
“… the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.”
What we see in this text is the Word of God being shared over and over again! We also see a dramatic increase in the numbers of Christ followers. Lastly, we see religious leadership that has chosen to repent and be obedient to Christ.
Being the Church everyday requires a relationship with the Lord of the Church, His name is Jesus Christ. Being the Church also necessitates daily commitment to the purpose of the Church which is the great commission.
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:18-20.
Going to church really doesn’t make much difference until you discovered the joy of following and serving Christ and have become the Church. When you understand the church is more than a building, it’s more important than denominationalism. The church is the Home of Jesus in your heart. The Apostle Paul told the Colossian believers, “…Christ in you, the hope of glory.” You see, having Church in you is so much more than just going to church.
